Big Foam will hold some of these heavy tungsten flies up when you're fishing shallow and don't want that indicator smashing the water. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTypically with foam, be sure you have a shorter, stout leader. I'll use 7ft 2x or 3x on the Bow. It just turns over better. Lighter, longer leaders don't have the energy to get these bugs turned over consistently.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I'm walking the banks I like to stand way back and land the Hopper tight to the grass keeping a high rod tip so the line is mostly off the water. If this isn't possible try and get safely off the bank and cast back to the bank, but for the love of stealth, move slowly and quietly. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth Hopper and Stones, move in the water so don't be afraid to give them a little twitch when fish are active on these guys. Grass banks and bushes are great habitat for hoppers to fall into the water from. Rocky bottoms and with good overhead cover are great spots to find trout eating Stones. Smaller sizes early in the specific hopper season, getting larger as the season progresses. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Stones. We get Skwala's around here, which are smaller than the Golden Stones. You'll cover both caddis and mayfly's with these hares ears. The Lighting Bugs, along with the Frenchie's are good searching and attractor patterns. Caddis Pupa, a variety of Mayfly Nymphs and in larger sizes even Stone, and Damsel Fly Nymphs. Actually, you could catch fish if this was the only nymph you ever used. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePrince Nymph\u003c\/strong\u003e. Another Classic. I'll use this as a small stone in the summer, or a backswimmer\/boatman in the fall. Otherwise I will randomly throw it on if things are slow. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBrown Hare's Ear\u003c\/strong\u003e. My absolute favourite Caddis Pupa imitation. If I'm nymphing with guests during May-July during peak Caddis time on the Bow, I have one of these on the rig. The material becomes dark when wet and it just produces fish for us. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCo Dependent.\u003c\/strong\u003e This is one of those goofy attractor patterns I like on high cloud days. It's got flash at the collar with , black body with a gold rib and really will work well at depth. Fish seem to respond to it in clear water and I often have it on in later summer months or early fall. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePerdigon.\u003c\/strong\u003e patterns are great slim line bugs that help you get down in the zone right away. I like the Brown with green flash body and use it often. However, I really believe it's just the design getting these guys where you need them quickly that makes them deadly. I like these on warmer days when I need to get right down to the cooler water and stay down there for entire drift. Typically they are the point fly in the rig. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFrenchie\u003c\/strong\u003e. This is another low profile buggy attractor pattern that seems to imitate whatever I need it to. I always have plenty of rust bodies with a copper collar. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOlive Chai Tea.\u003c\/strong\u003e A great Caddis Larva imitation and in smaller sizes is effective as a BWO nymph. It's just buggy and when colour matters, olive is a staple on the Bow and surrounding creeks. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCoffee Snack.  \u003c\/strong\u003eI like this one a lot. I use it as an attractor pattern and find it can be effective any time of year. I have good success during active PMD and Caddis hatches with this one. It's just buggy and I like it (and sell it) with a coffee bead. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love tungsten in the big water and use primarily coffee beads, other than the lighting Figure out what bugs are in the current and imitate the movements. A PMD nymph is pretty helpless so a dead drift is probably best. Often, a nearly direct upstream presentation will do the trick. If the drag free approach isn't working, don't be afraid to give it a little twitch just upstream of your rising fish. Caddis often \"skidder\" and sometimes the trout need a little encouragement. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen in doubt, size down. This works more often for me than changing patterns and includes your dries, emergers and nymphs. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf they won't eat one of these, consider an emerger behind the dry. If I don't have an emerger handy, I'll just cut down the wings on the elk hair so the caddis sinks slightly. I'll use 15-20 lb test. We're fishing structure, so the heavy line helps get us out of trouble. Remember when the water is cold, slow these down. Fish can't move to attack in cold water conditions and they'll likely just ignore you. However, once the river warms later in the day, don't be afraid to put some RPM's on your retrieve.  Spring is leech mating time, so this pattern in purple, black and black with brown hackle is great under a nymph rig. Typically as the point fly and don't be afraid to hold for a second or two at the end of the drift. Often you'll get a strike while the bug is moving towards the service on the drag. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring June and July, Brown works very well under an indicator. I have a feeling the trout see it as a Golden Stone nymph. I can't verify this but my guide notes tell me to put this unit on the line this time of year and it works. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the water bumps up and gets a little cloudy, I like these in dark colours bounced off the bank into the pockets. I'll use a floating line here, with a short 3 to 4 foot fluoro to the fly line. We'll fish fast with only two or 3 strips off the bank and then right back into the next pocket. In High Water, trout tend to head tight into the deflections on the bank.
