Why Pheasant Tails? They imitate everything! The smaller patterns are great mayfly imitations, the mid sizes are a decent for caddis pupa and the larger size 12's and 10's will fool fish as a stone. So many bug species have brown nymphs.....these are brown, so they just work. Match your size, and most importantly get your depth right. Figure out what bugs are in the current and imitate the movements. A PMD nymph is pretty helpless so a dead drift is probably best. An emerging Caddis "darts" to the surface, so letting your drift swing and tighten up will allow the pheasant tail to rise up in the column and attract hungry trout.
